Real Toys from Virtual Worlds - most kids now have one or more!

[caption id="attachment_1626" align="alignleft" width="71" caption="Club Penguin"]Club Penguin Plush, Toys & Codes[/caption]

Gone are the days when television and movies were the keys to creating popular toys - now kids want what to play with real versions of the characters they encounter first on the computer. Whether it's Moshi Monsters, Club Penguin, the newest Skylanders series or another, 55% of kids in the UK are reported to own at least one real life toy based on a video game's virtual world, according to Gamasutra. Based on popularity at ToyWiz.com, we'd expect a similar result for kids in the US as well.

[caption id="attachment_1627" align="alignleft" width="110" caption="Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure"]Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure[/caption]

The options range from toys that are simply real world representations of in-game characters, like the very popular Angry Birds, to toys that actually "plug in" and come to life on the computer to be played and saved. Many of the toys like Webkinz, Club Penguin and Moshi Monsters also offer in-game items or bonuses based on codes that come with the toys. That makes these a double-treat for players: a real toy and a virtual one that they can use online.

For the uninitiated, here's a quick look at some of the hottest game-and-toy offerings currently available:

  • Angry Birds:
The most popular game in the world has it's own line of plush, offline games and magnets, keychains and more. With over 500,000,000 downloads of the game, it's a sure bet that kids who like games have tried this one.

  • Club Penguin:
A Disney offering, "CP" has the quality and adorable eye-appeal you'd expect from the leader in family-friendly entertainment. It is a role-playing game, where you interact as a penguin in a beautiful snowy world. The Club Penguin toys offer coin codes to use in exchange for unique in-game items.

  • Moshi Monsters:
Combining the fun of an online game and the popularity of virtual pets, Moshi Monsters lets you adopt a monster and solve puzzles to buy items like food, clothing and decorations for it. It's popularity has grown quickly, and now the real world toys released this year are in great demand. These include trading cards, plush and figures with codes for in-game items.

  • Skylanders:
Available for all gaming platforms, Skylanders is a unique new gaming experience. For this one, the figures are a must - they are placed on the "portal" and come to life in-game. These toys actually save the character's progression, and can even be taken to a friend's house to play together on the same console.

  • Poptropica: Developed by the Family Education Network, Poptropica lets players travel, play games, compete and communicate together to complete islands. The codes in Poptropica toys give players unique costumes to wear in the game too.

  • Webkinz: Incredibly popular stuffed animals (plush) that all have access to the "Webkinz World" website. These range from common housepets to wild or fantasy animals. The code on each Webkin allows that pet to be adopted in the virtual world, where your stuffed animal gets to come to life.

[caption id="attachment_1630" align="alignleft" width="63" caption="Sonic the Hedgehog"]Sonic the Hedgehog[/caption]

Not only are these toys hot, we have seen merchandise for pretty much every game on the market. From Assassin's Creed to World of Warcraft, and classic-to-modern versions of Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, there is no end to the now-complete tie in of computer gaming and toys.

So what do you think of these? Do you or your family own any toys that tie in to video games? Would you buy an item that came with a bonus for online use?

Incoming Gears of War!

Our new Gears of War series 1 from NECA arrived today to much fanfare around here! We've had so many orders and we've all been dying to get our hands on these. We have not been disappointed!

First off, Marcus Fenix: 30 points of articulation make him ultra-poseable, and he's got the gear and armor from the new Gears release to bring him up-to-date. His figure includes the Retro Lancer weapon too - which is pretty much enough reason to pick him up. It is, hands down, one of the best looking weapons ever conceived.

[caption id="attachment_1621" align="aligncenter" width="187" caption="Former "Control" dispatcher for Delta Squad, Anya is now a frontline fighting Gear herself. No matter which way you voted for his fate, he's definitely a well-muscled figure worth having.

ToyWiz Hot Toy Watchlist

ToyWiz Hot Toy Watchlist

By popular request: introducing the holiday hot toy availability watchlist!

Every year we get last-minute calls from parents and families in search of "must have" gifts that are sold out everywhere, and we don't want to let you down! So this year we're keeping a tally of the biggest sellers to let you know what's in stock and to alert when there's a danger of a pre-holiday sellout. Coming out of "Black Friday" weekend and into "Cyber Monday," here's where we stand on some of the fastest-moving toys:

Xia Xia PetsXia Xia Pets

Selling as fast as we expected, so we're well-stocked. But the late shopper's challenge will be finding specific characters, shells or playsets at the last minute. While we feel confident in our ability to offer Xia Xia, some items are already unavailable at other retailers and may sell out. So if you need a specific item on the list, it might pay to grab it early.

Air SwimmersAir Swimmers

3 of the 4 available models are in stock, but an early sell out on the infrared clownfish was surprising. We do still have an RC clownfish though, and we are trying to keep all of these in stock for immediate shipping.

Fijit FriendsFijit Friends

It's the year's hottest electronic toy, and one that everyone will marvel over at gift time. They're selling briskly and it's hard to say if the pace will remain steady or if we'll see a spike in demand at the last minute.

FyrFlyzFyrFlyz

Definitely a FAST mover this year! We stocked up, but it seems like everyone tacks at least one of these onto an order. They're a great value, and inexpensive enough for exchanges between children, stocking stuffers and prizes.

BeybladeBeyblade Metal Fusion

Why TWO bars that are so different? Well honestly - we're the best source for the most Beyblade tops, stadiums and accessories anywhere. We'll have a massive selection, we won't run out and we won't let you down even at the last minute.

But that top bar in the red? That's got to be for the latest Japanese imports from Takara/Tomy that are already flying out the door. If you need a gift for a serious blader, these premium tops are going very fast. Due to time restraints on imports, restocking before the holidays is unlikely, so these are a RED ZONE order if you need them!

Disney/Pixar Cars 2Cars 2

We have a massive selection of Disney/Pixar Cars 2, including die cast vehicles. We're in the green for this category because we always stock these very well, but as with everything at the holidays, if you need a specific item, it might pay to check out the status early. Some items are already sold out, but we have all the best in stock and ready to ship.

The Beast from the East makes his inaugural giveaway to...

Thank you to everyone who entered - I started my day laughing. So many of these were funny and fitting, but we had to pick just one, and it is Warren "Zevon" Piece.

Congratulations, Clayton! Please let us know where to send your prize!

Warren "Zevon" Piece was just too clever to pass up. In case anyone doesn't know the references: Warren Zevon sang "Werewolves of London." And think of the name itself: Warren Piece (War and Peace)?  That's epic! I mean literally epic - a reference to Tolstoy's epic!

Now if only my cat had such a good name! ><

His name will be Warren “Zevon” Piece.

[CONTEST ENDED] Who is that furry fellow?

Here he is, folks, step up and meet the latest in the ToyWiz lineup:
Introducing: The Beast from the East!

Look at him closely and remember that face. Why? Because whenever The Beast from the East makes an appearance, he's giving away what he's holding! It means there's a contest going on somewhere, so read closely to find it! You might see the Beast from the East on Flickr or Facebook, our website or the Brickarms forums, even right here on the blog or in all places at once! But when he's around, there's a giveaway somewhere!

SO let's get to the good part. You want to know how to get that awesome G36, covered in 24K gold? RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

This is an easy one: we want you to help name the Beast from the East. Is he a Fred? A George? A Mary? You can do better than those! Come up with a name and post it as a reply to this thread. Tomorrow morning, we'll choose the name from your suggestions! So read through first - if there's a duplicate name that is chosen, it will go to the first submitter!

So go ahead, name that generous monster! *PLEASE enter one time only! If you change your mind but can't edit the old entry, just say so in your new post. I'll go with the last thing you posted, not the first if you change your mind and need to update. But only one entry per person will be considered!

Also, as always: giveaways are subject to the usual ToyWiz restrictions, posted here: http://brickarmsforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=275

Friday, September 30, 2011

I hope you all registered on the BAF thread because...

I'm going to pull a random person from this thread: http://brickarmsforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2307

and find our Prototype winner in just a few minutes!!

...and the figure is...

My Samuel L. Jackson from Snakes on a Plane!

Congrats to ~Cmorgenweck~!

Sorry I kept you going so long - since some people were still guessing on the BAF, I am awarding a prize to the first correct answer in both places!

Hint #3

Hint #2

[*BA PARTY GAME #3*]: WHO is this fig? - PRIZE

This is my favorite minifigure – given to me by JD. It lives on my desk, and it's supposed to be someone famous from a movie. I'm going to post a series of pictures to show a little bit more of the figure each time until the whole thing is revealed. When you think you have it figured out, post your guess! Winner gets $5 ToyWiz cash! HINT: The pieces are from different figures, so just seeing one you recognize might not give it away!

Landshark at last!

And a "landfish" too. And we're getting them (Air Swimmers) just in time for my birthday in September, yo! Hint, hint - $39.99 at ToyWiz.com, link is to the left. I'm not saying get me one, just saying they're totally <-right there!

First, what it is: A giant, remote-controlled zeppelin-fish of either the scary shark or more kid-friendly clownfish variety.

Why it's great: Hello! It's a big flying fish with realistic fins that work! These things move faster than you think and are far more agile than I expected. Gone are the days of the lame balloon-on-a-string blimps that just bob in the air (boring)! You can really put this baby right where you want it...in perfect position to startle a friend, perhaps.

Watch the video to see how these Air Swimmers move, then scroll down to find out just why I want one so much.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIJINiK9azc&w=400&h=255]

So...what would I do with an Air Swimmer?

  • First and foremost, I would chase my pets. The dog, definitely. The cat...well I don't think I'd see the cat for awhile after bringing one of these out.

  • Buzz my roommate while she's on the computer. I can definitely see navigating a shark down the hall and into her room for a good scare.

  • Freak out the neighbor's child. I think I might just coordinate with his parents to fly it back and forth outside his window a few times to see his reaction. (Dad, get the video camera ready - YouTube wants to see it too).

  • Answer my door. I just picture my friends standing there looking into my living room, only to have a giant shark come around the corner, right up to the screen.

  • Deliver messages upstairs...because I'm that lazy and I hate yelling. Instead, I could just attach a note and send it by Candygram Fishgram.

It's bad enough to have a constant backseat driver, but now they think I'm going to put Yoda in my car?

Think again.

I'm one of those people. You know, those people with no sense of direction (go ahead and tease me if you must, I have no rebuttal). Remember when your mother told you never to point because it's rude? Well it is rude, but that's not why I try to never, ever point. Pointing generally leads to personal embarrassment because I'll inevitably be pointing in the wrong direction from whatever I'm trying to demonstrate. That includes pointing toward my own home from just a few blocks away. I'm not even kidding here guys - I have seriously indicated to someone that my home was in a completely different direction because I'd made two turns since leaving it not 5 minutes before. It is that bad.

[caption id="attachment_1273" align="aligncenter" width="165" caption="This was supposed to be the working title for my autobiography."][/caption]

My directional handicap might be amusing if you happen to know me, but it's confusing if you don't, and downright risky if you stopped to ask me directions. And worse still...if I get lost, I'm completely and totally lost. I'm amazed and impressed by people who can "find their way back" from places. Me? I've found my way to another state before I knew I was in trouble before. Enter: Garmin. I love my Garmin GPS! I live by my Garmin and her crisp Australian accent (yes, I chose the Aussie girl - she sounded friendly at the time).

But being so Garmin-reliant for years now, eventually I began to detect a hint of frustration in her voice. I sometimes miss a few turns here and there (I know, it's hard to believe right?). When I do, my electronic Australian friend tries ever-so-hard to set me back on course. "Continue 200 feet, then make a U-turn" is friendly enough. "Make a U-turn" follows with a little more emphasis. When I miss that, sometimes I think there's a deep sigh as she says "recalculating..." and tries again to send me on my way.

Then today I read that I can give up my Aussie backseat driver and go for Yoda or Darth Vader! Star Wars voices might be very cool for someone who can actually follow directions, but for me? No way.

First off, Yoda. You're kidding, right? I'm lucky to follow a simple voice command! Twist that around Yoda-style and all hope is lost. I'm no Jedi behind the wheel. I know it. Yoda knows it. Why make life harder for both of us?

Darth Vader though - that would be disastrous. I do wonder exactly how he'd say "You missed your turn," but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it would probably not be with patience and understanding. For someone like me, trying to navigate the mean streets of my own town is hard enough without the pressure of a Sith Lord breathing down my neck. And seriously, with my track record, we've pretty well established that the force is not with me. I don't stand a chance.

So for now, I'm sticking with my Australian friend. She may be a little impatient, but at least I think I could take her in a fair fight.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="451" caption="I can probably deal with this on the dashboard instead. But if you pair it with the GPS voice, things might get a little too real."][/caption]

My First Mod: My Little Pony, Part 1

I promised y'all a Mod Monday, but we had so much going on, I held this post back! I've got 20 minutes still though!

It's a long story, so I'll send this out in two parts!

Until last year, my only custom toy mod was drawing tattoos on my favorite doll when I was 4. Last year, I got the bug though. It all started so innocently with a sweet My Little Pony (Green Apple Pony, to be exact).

Over the summer, a friend and I had an ongoing joke about a My Little Pony that had been abandoned on the road to my house. She stayed along the street all summer being run over, mowed, and massacred in various ways. But for months, the pony persevered. Ultimately, she became just a faded pony head, but still, every day, I looked to see what else had happened to it and gave a report on the pony. Finally, she simply disappeared and I thought the ongoing saga of the road-pony was over....but no!

Shortly after that, a package arrived from my friend. He'd sent me a replacement pony. But this would be MY little pony...not a random pony abandoned on the roadside! So her adventures began in a series of photos over several months, showing what Pony was up to around the office.

[caption id="attachment_1250" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="She got fancy hair styles..."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1251" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="...helped make Jambalaya for the team..."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1252" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="...wore fancy jewels..."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1253" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="...Offered helpful suggestions..."][/caption]

...and even took a trip to the Farmer's Market.

She was pretty much the spokesmodel for my desk.

So the saga of the pony went on and on. As you can probably tell, I had a little too much fun with Green Apple Pony for a grown-up, but that's okay, right? Right?

I was always trying to think of something new and interesting to do with my pony, so as the holidays approached, I had a brilliant idea: chrome pony.

[caption id="attachment_1270" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="Like this, but MLP style!"][/caption]

It should have been a thing of beauty. If you want to know how it turned out though, I'm saving that bit for later.
