Monster Monday: Leatherface

Today's monster takes me back - way back - to the first time I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I had a fresh new driver's license and permission to spend the night with a couple of friends, so we laid in with classic horror films and junk food  for the night. Three girls, three scary movies, and trouble on the horizon.

[caption id="attachment_1071" align="alignnone" width="150" caption="Why did we think this was a good idea?"]Leatherface Action Figure[/caption]

I'll admit is was late and I was already spooked when we got started with this one, but it scared the daylights out of me. The super-creepiness of the meat hooks, Old Monty in the wheelchair, and of course...Leatherface himself had me thinking I heard noises outside the window and being too afraid to leave the room alone. I was completely and totally freaked out. Then things got real.

The other two girls got into a huge fight. I don't remember the point of it, only that it turned into a horrible screaming-and-slapping thing and I couldn't break it up. A few minutes later, the parents were awake and stomping into the basement, telling us all to leave. To leave! At 2:00AM, with TSM still in the player!

A few important details: my house was far out in the country and I'd never driven at night. And I was rightfully terrified on many, many levels. But out I went.

I made it home just fine, of course, though my hands were shaking and I was sure I saw movement in the woods the whole way down every country road. In fact, I was nearly in tears by the time I parked to make a mad dash from the driveway to the door. All logic failed me though: I was afraid that a chainsaw-wielding cannibal would grab me before I got inside. I should have been more afraid of waking my parents...because that happened! Thanks to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I didn't get permission to take the car overnight again for years!

[caption id="attachment_1070" align="alignnone" width="171" caption="Yep, you get the chainsaw, the pulley and the severed arm too. Don't blame me if you can't sleep tonight though."]Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre[/caption]

So why did I choose Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre for Monster Monday anyway? Well, honestly it's because we have this completely creepy McFarlane Toys Movie Maniacs 12 Inch Deluxe Action Figure on our huge BLOWOUT SALE - down to $29.99 from $49.99. He's a great deal...if you're brave enough to sleep with him in the house.

Redakai! First Impressions

Redakai has taken trading cards by storm since it's release a few weeks ago, and it's no wonder. I finally got my hands on a couple of structure decks and a few friends to play against, and got to know all about it!

I'll be writing a series of posts on the game, but just to get the ball rolling,  a few observations:

  • Seriously, the cards look amazing. The photos and videos you see online can't do justice to the 3D animated effects, especially with the overlaid attacks. The clear part of the card doesn't muddy or obscure the underlying cards much at all, even when stacked a few cards deep.

  • Getting started with the basic game is fast & easy. I recommend playing a hand or two of "basic" style just to get they lay of the cards. You'll switch quickly and smoothly to advanced rules from there.

  • You can start with just a couple of structure decks like I did, but if you're planning to play, I recommend the Redakai Hobby Edition Championship Set - not just for the 44 Cards though. The Character Bay, Screen, Counters & Draw Deck really keep things organized nicely on the game table.

And a little pro-tip from me to you: Don't forget to return attack cards to your opponent before you grab them up and shuffle! (Yep, that happened in the first game!)

All in all, I played several games today and enjoyed it immensely. It is easy to learn, but it will take some skill (and a good deck) to master! Please subscribe to our RSS feed to stay in touch. I'll have more details and tips on Redakai: Conquer the Kairu soon!

TWizKid Wednesday: Lucas Ayala Petitions for Pokemon in School...and wins!

I'd like to try something new: TWizKid Wednesdays, where we recognize a remarkable young person in the media. This week it's an easy choice - we love Pokemon too!

Lucas Ayala is a third-grader in Queens, NY who wanted to overturn the ban against Pokemon cards at his school. He wrote a letter that was persuasive enough to get it done, by outlining all the positive benefits of the game. He persuaded his teacher that the cards help with math (anyone who has played can attest to that too).  As a result, Pokemon is now allowed at recess and even in some math classes, and another kid proved that he can make a difference!

Monster Monday Continues with CLOVERFIELD!

So you didn't get a good enough look at this guy in the movie, right? A lot of frustrated movie-goers complained about it, but I loved the way he was obscured til the big reveal.

Roaring Cloverfield Monster Head

The action figure, of course, will let you get that close-up any time! This is a big roaring 14"  monster with interchangeable heads, parasites and the severed head of Lady Liberty to recreate an unforgettable Cloverfield scene on your shelf!

Cloverfield Monster

This is the only collectible from the series, so there aren't many left for sale.

Cloverfield Monster Action Figure

Edited to add: After making this post, my co-worker JD mentioned that the monster's name is Clover, which reminded me that my great-uncle once had a mule named Clover. Clover wasn't a good mule, either. But since there's no Clover-the-Mule action figure, I'm sticking with this sweet Clover-the-Cloverfield-monster figure.

Bye Bye, Jace!

Wizards of the Coast made a big announcement this morning:
Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic will both be banned in Standard effective July 1, 2011. Exception: The deck list for the "War of Attrition" Event Deck will be legal in Standard if kept completely intact. That deck, which went on sale on June 10, contains two copies of Stoneforge Mystic.

...and I think I heard the anguished cries of my tourney friends all the way from my house.

At the risk of upsetting a few people, and with the caveat that I'm still a new player to the game, I have to say: I support this move.  First off though, I'm really sorry to all those who spent a lot of cash to get these cards. I know - I'd have done the same if I felt I could afford them and I'd be angry at the loss too.

Jace the Mindsculptor & Stoneforge Mystic...banned

But from a (newbie) gameplay perspective, these things were monstrous. I got so tired of playing against the same decks week after week, and not feeling I could compete except by luck. And while luck is a factor in MTG, it shouldn't be the only factor that determined whether my red deck could pull through against an opponent! But honestly, unless I drew out high damage early enough, I never felt I stood a chance. I realize that some part of that is due to my inexperience, but still - when virtually every week the same decks win the tourney, something's amiss. Because ultimately, for everyone's enjoyment and the health of the game, variety is key.

So, goodbye, Jace. So long, Stoneforge Mystic...you were fun for those who had you, and a pain for the rest of us. I do hope this move restores some balance to the local tourney and lets us all see some innovative new decks being built. I look forward to seeing what my next opponents come up with!

What do you think of the changes?

Yu-Gi-Oh! Breaks World Record!

KONAMI announced today that it broke it's own record in the Guiness Book of World Records, with over 25 billion  Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards sold as of March 31, 2011. (25,175,567,833 if you want to be specific!)

I did a little math for you...and I'm bad at math, so if you want to fact-check me, go ahead! But calculating the size of a standard Yu-Gi-Oh! card gave me these fun numbers:

  • Laid end-to-end lengthwise, all the Yu-Gi-Oh! cards sold would circle the earth 54 times.

  • Spread out with no overlaps or spaces, they would cover over 49 square miles - enough to cover the state of Mississippi or Pennsylvania with cards left over!

  • Stacked in one giant monster deck, they'd reach 137,661,678.88 feet tall...the height of 4,744 Mount Everests atop one another!

To celebrate this fun event, we're cooking up a great new contest! Keep watching for information, or follow us on Twitter and Facebook to learn the details.

What else would this number of cards cover? Get out your calculators and check my math or let me know how you'd compare the size of Yu-Gi-Oh's total card sales!

Blizzard + Mega Bloks!

I may not have mentioned it here, but I've played a lot of World of Warcraft over the years, and I mean a lot.

I could chat with you all day about PvP and some of my crazy all-nighters in Warsong Gulch, but let's talk about what's new today: World of Warcraft and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Mega Bloks! MEGA Brands announced today that they've entered into a licensing partnership with Blizzard Entertainment to release themed sets starting next summer.

World of Warcraft Mega Bloks

I can't wait to see what they come up with, and of course, we expect to have these for pre-order as soon as specific set information is available! In the meantime, I keep thinking of what I'd like to see in a set...

  • My dream set: I'd love one of the PvP arenas or Battlegrounds, plus mini figures to recreate some epic battles of the past.

  • How about the pirate ship from Booty Bay!

  • Gnomish contraptions of any sort would thrill me. Yes, I played a gnome. What about it?

  • And I can't stop thinking of great figures - favorite NPCs, mobs and animals would be awesome.

For the record, I also played StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Briefly. Badly. I should try again though; I think I gave up too quickly when I fell behind my friend in the learning curve. But I can imagine some amazing things to build from that game as well, like you build them in the game! But I have to wonder, just how many zerglings can they fit in a set? Because I'll need a lot of them!

Just Another Monster Monday

What is is now, Cloverfield? The Creature from the Black Lagoon?

Nope...it's zombies again. This time, new action figures that are truly unique. Every time I think I've seen it all in action figures (a million points of articulation! interchangeable everything!), someone does something unexpected. This time, Todd McFarlane nailed it  with the new Walking Dead action figures coming out this fall.

[caption id="attachment_1013" align="alignnone" width="158" caption="This guy scares me as much as the zombies."]Image of Daryl Dixon Action figure[/caption]

I am completely hooked on the AMC series version, so I was thrilled to see how accurately they were able to capture the actors. Facial scans did the trick beautifully. But being McFarlane, they took it to a new level. From a zombie biter with a spring-loaded jaw to the best feature of all: you can take the zombies apart. We don't have these in yet (pre-orders only just now), but it is being reported that when you pull off heads and limbs, these action figures are full of gross zombie guts! Sweet!

Attention: Marvel Fans in Ohio!

The Plain Dealer reported today that Marvel Studios has issued an open casting call for extras in The Avengers movie, which will be filming in Cleveland in August and September. And whether you're a fan or not, I have to encourage anyone with the spare time and a little sense of adventure to go try to get in the cast! If you've never been an extra in a film before, it's definitely an experience to write home about!

This looks like a great one too: the celebrity lineup has Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man; Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury; Chris Hemsworth as Thor; Chris Evans as Captain America; Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow; Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as Hulk.

Personally, I was only a movie extra once. The pay was mediocre and the days were long, but overall it was a lot of fun and I came away with some great stories and memories. I was offered other film work after that, but sadly, I couldn't make the time commitment to do it again, though I badly wanted to.

The Plain Dealer article has the details for this casting call, and every movie is looking for something different. But from my own experience, I can tell you a few things you can probably expect if you go:

  1. Don't worry about your age, height, weight, or other features. This isn't a beauty contest - directors are often looking for a wide range of types to represent a crowd.

  2. Don't try to stand out! It isn't the time for experimental hair colors or distracting makeup, unless the call is for a specific  type. Ultimately, the hair, makeup and costume people will change your appearance to suit the scene anyway. The call for The Avengers specifies your "best business executive outfit" and may expect you to wear the same clothing on set.

  3. Leave the colored contacts out! We were warned time and again that colored lenses were forbidden because they appear strange on film.

When you're hired and hit the set, that's when the experience gets real!

  1. Listen. Listen to everything your director or anyone in charge of production tells you. Not only must you know where to go and what to do, but they'll also probably instruct you that there will be no photos or autographs, not to approach actors and actresses, and tell you when to be absolutely silent. Breaking the rules will end your fun, so pay attention.

  2. Expect to be told that you can't have your cell phone with you at all on the set. Not only does no one want an inadvertent ringtone interruption, but most would rather not have random images of the filming or the stars leaking out to the internet.

  3. You'll do a lot of standing around and waiting. You'll be amazed at how long it can take to create a few minutes of film and how many times you'll do the same thing over and over before you're done. Don't worry about being too bored though, there were lots of fascinating people on my set, and we all got to know each other during the downtime. Oh, and the food and snacks they provided were excellent!

  4. Don't expect to meet or hangout with celebrities. It might happen, but probably not. The star of the film I was in was fantastic for working out comedy routines for all of us during lulls in the action, but didn't approach or meet anyone one-on-one.

So if you're in Cleveland, or if there's a casting call for another film near you, I highly recommend checking it out. And remember, forever more, whenever that film is mentioned or comes on television, you get to point and tell everyone "Hey! I'm in this movie!"

New things are so shiny!

One awesome thing about working at ToyWiz is the constant influx of new merchandise - we get to see all the collectibles and toys first. Opening so many boxes makes it feel a little like Christmas, even in the heat!
